Ask any motorcyclist why they only ride seasonally and they will offer the same forthright answer. Weather. Hot, dry nights are great for cruising along the highway with little between you and the open road. On the other hand, cold, wet days can be downright deadly.

Then there is the middle ground between these extremes. Warm thunderstorms cause dangerous, low visibility situations. Frigid, dry eras are shiver inducing nightmares, at best, and the list goes on. Fortunately, Indian Motorcycle has developed a novel, temperature controlled seat that may make each of the aforementioned predicaments a bit more tolerable.

Ideal Motorcycle Seat Temperatures

Regardless of whether it be hot or cold, wet or dry, motorcycles seats tend to reflect current weather conditions. This painful and sometimes sticky situation was posed to continue until seat warmers were invented back in the 50s. Modern variations of this invention utilize HVAC technology to circulate heated or cooled air via vents implanted in the seat.

Unfortunately, this method often resulted in seat surfaces that do not reflect the requested temperature. Instead, the pocket of cool or warm air permeates from the vent to give a sense of change. Thankfully, Indian Motorcycle was not willing to settle for faux temperature control.

ClimaCommand Classic Seat

The new seats Indian Motorcycle uses are equipped with graphene. This strong, single layer lattice of carbon atoms, is highly conductive, nearly transparent, flexible, and in some instances can self-repair. All in all, these futuristic traits make graphene an ideal substance to use in outdoor seats, such as those on motorcycles.

To aptly complement the novel technology, the motorcycle manufacturer added the following to the heating and cooling setup.

  • System capable of detecting and pumping any excess heat away from contact area
  • Capturing any heat generated to maintain warm temperatures during cold weather
  • Separate, adjustable temperature controlled feature in the passenger seat

In a statement made by the Indian Motorcycle Vice President of Parts, Garments, and Accessories, Ross Clifford announced that ClimaCommand effectively eliminates the temperature related discomfort associated with motorcycle seat contact. Clifford went on to note the graphene thermoelectric tech is “truly a game-changer, and another example of Indian Motorcycle bringing difference-making innovation to the market.”

To ensure complete customer satisfaction, Indian Motorcycle also equipped the passenger armrest and trunk backrest pads with the novel temperature controlled technology. However, since the seat is $1,200 on its own, the aforementioned bonus items may have to wait.

That said, the comfy, UV and water resistant ClimaCommand Classic Seat is worth checking out and can be equipped on any of the following models.
